Dr. James E. Grunig este Profesor Emerit în cadrul departamentului de comunicare al Universităţii Maryland.

Grunig este coautor al lucrărilor: Managementul Relaţiilor Publice (Managing Public Relations), Tehnici de Relaţii Publice (Public Relations Techniques), Ghid managerial de excelenţă în PR şi managementul comunicării (Manager's Guide to Excellence in Public Relations and Communication Management), Organizaţiile eficiente şi excelenţa în relaţii publice: un studiu de managementul comunicării în 3 ţări (Excellent Public Relations and Effective Organizaţions: A Study of Communication Management in Three Countries). Este editorul lucrării Excelenţă în Relaţii Publice şi Managementul Comunicării (Excellence in Public Relations and Communication Management). A publicat peste 250 de articole, cărţi, lucrări şi rapoarte ştiinţifice.

A fost primul câştigător al premiului "Pathfinder Award for excellence in academic research on public relations", oferit de Institute for Public Relations în 1984, pentru întreaga sa activitate de cercetare, În 1989, a primit "Outstanding Educator Award" din partea Societăţii Nord-Americane de PR (PRSA). În 1992, fundaţia PRSA i-a acordat distincţia "Jackson, Jackson & Wagner award" pentru cercetare în domeniul ştiintelor comportamentale. În 2000, obţine un premiu special din partea Asociaţiei academice de Jurnalism şi Comunicare de Masă (AEJMC). În 2005, primeşte cea mai înaltă disticţie a Institute for PR "the Alexander Hamilton Medal" pentru contribuţia sa la profesionalizarea domeniului PR şi premiul Dr. Hamid Notghi din partea Institutului Kargozar de Relaţii Publice din Teheran pentru realizări deosebite în carieră. În 2006 a susţinut discursul cu ocazia celei de-a 50-a  aniversări a Institutului de Relaţii Publice (IPR) şi a primit un titlu de doctorat onorific din partea Universităţii San Martin de Porres din Lima, Peru. A condus proiectul de cercetare de 400.000 $ al Fundatiei de Cercetare IABC privind excelenţa în relaţii publice şi managementul comunicării.
